  As s a child, as a schoolboy, I knew only the physical appearance of London. But as my knowledge of English increased, I became aware of other, less obvious aspects of the city. And by now I have developed a passion for English literature. Consequently, literature becomes an invitation to me from London in which there is disarming sweetness.

  Naturally, literature implies books and books imply bookshops. And as is said, there more bookshops in London to the square mile than any other city in the world. Those bookshops! Those marvelous domes of glorious literature, of profound philosophy and sophisticated science! They stand in the twilight, with the river immediately behind and below them, and Big Ben rising majestically in the background. In London, one can buy Dickson at most railway stations and Shakespeare practically everywhere. What an earthly paradise it is for a bookworm like me!

  London is the city of fog in literature. There is much to be said for a London fog. A mist, or light fog, has a fugitive fantastic charm, and it gives the Londoners all that change which they are always needing. When the world is all but invisible, and growing visible bit by bit looks utterly different from its accustomed self, who will fail to think of the sonnet by William Wordsworth:

  Earth has not anything to show more fair:

  Dull would he be of soul who could pass by

  A sight so touching in its majesty:

  This City now doth, like a garment, wear

  The beauty of the morning; silent, bare,

  Ships, towers, domes, theaters, and temples lie

  Open unto the fields, to the sky;

  All bright and glittering in the smokeless air.

  Never did sun more beautifully steep

  In his first splendor, valley, rock, or hill;

  Ne’er saw I, never felt,, a calm so deep!

  The river glideth at his own sweet will:

  Dear God! the very houses seems asleep;

  And all that mighty heart is lying still!

  伸向天空,展向平原;

  When winter comes, one can savor the lonely grace of the trees, their bare tracery, unspeakably delicate, clear against a purple or violet haze in the sky,,and the pretty fairyland where the yellow lamps make spots of color—all this was beauty wonderful and magical. In a word, in the open sunshine of London, anyone must run glittering like a brook.

  Besides this, London is the city of poetry. Shakespeare, Milton, Wordsworth, Byron, Sherry and Keats chanted a charming tongue in the city. Their souls are like a star and dwelt apart; they had a voice whose sound was like the sea, pure as the naked heavens, majestic and free. When rain or shine in the world, they will stay with us and raise us up, by giving us grace, virtue, freedom and power.

  To make a long story short, London seems to me the city of beauty and wisdom in English literature, like Athens in the ancient Greek or Venice in the Renaissance, where everyone attains

  To his perfection.

  Having read the essay, I believe the author is a reliable guide to London, because he knows what is not merely the present, but the present moment of the past in the city of beauty and wisdom. As we know, people see fogs in London, not because there are fogs, but because poets and painters have taught them the mysterious loveliness of such effects, so it is peceptive of the author to focus on the fogs and the poets in the essay.
